LIVERMORE, Calif. (KGO) — He served in WWII. And on Friday, 81 years later, he lastly returned residence.
“When there may be an MIA, Lacking In Motion, there isn’t a physique coming residence to bury. It prompted our household to imagine he was useless. So now he’s residence,” say Sandy Althaus.
In March, 1944, U.S. Military Air Drive Lieutenant Thomas Kelly, who grew up in Livermore, was deployed to Papua New Guinea. On the morning of March 11, his aircraft was shot down.
Sandy Althaus, Lt. Kelly’s first cousin, was 3-and-a-half years outdated, when he died. She says she remembers him nicely. She provides, rising up, it was too painful for the household to speak about Lt. Kelly, who they affectionately known as Tobie.
“I’ve felt near him all my life. I keep in mind he wrote many, many letters. And our household stored all of them. I went by way of these letters, and he talked about me each time. And I used to be simply so touched!” says Sandy.
An honorable procession was held in San Jose for a WWII veteran returning residence, whose stays had been recognized 80 years later by way of DNA testing.
Then got here a name from Sandy’s son, Scott Althaus, in 2013.
“Memorial Day 2013, known as me and mentioned, ‘Mother, I need to know the identify of your cousin, who died, as a result of I need to honor him in the present day,'” says Sandy.
“On Memorial Day, 2013, I began a couple of hours of web analysis that in a short time discovered details about the ultimate mission. And that began what would turn into a 12-year journey,” says Scott.
Scott is professor on the College of Illinois and researches wartime communications. He’d been engaged on army casualty information from WWII, which peaked his curiosity about his family.

On Sunday, Lt. Kelly will lie in repose at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Livermore.
On Monday, a motorcade will drive Lt. Kelly by way of Livermore, previous his outdated home and highschool, to be buried at Saint Michael’s cemetery.
