SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — There is a new strike deadline looming involving 1000’s of Safeway workers throughout the Bay Space.
On Saturday, the union representing grocery staff now says they may strike at midnight if a contract settlement is not reached. The union agreed to increase the deadline previous midnight on Friday to permit negotiations to proceed.
Safeway administration and representatives from the United Meals and Industrial Employees union met behind closed doorways once more Saturday working towards negotiating an settlement which avoids a piece stoppage involving about 25,000 Safeway workers. A federal mediator was current. Friday’s strike deadline was prolonged after the union stated progress was being made in contract talks.
