AUSTIN, Texas — State Rep. Dade Phelan launched an announcement Friday morning asserting he’s withdrawing from the Home Speaker race. He is led the Home as speaker for 4 years.
“By stepping apart, I imagine we create the most effective alternative for our members to rally round a brand new candidate who will uphold the ideas that make our Home some of the distinctive, deliberative legislative our bodies within the nation,” Phelan’s assertion reads.
Phelan retained his seat within the 2024 election after narrowly beating out challenger David Covey within the GOP main runoff.
“I’m profoundly grateful to those that have supported me all through my speakership—principled conservatives who’ve proven steadfast resolve and braveness within the face of immense intimidation from outsiders wishing to affect our chamber and its processes,” the assertion says.
In February, the Republican Get together of Texas formally censured Phelan over what it known as a “lack of constancy to Republican ideas and priorities.”
This got here after Phelan initiated the impeachment of Texas Legal professional Common Ken Paxton, whom the state Senate declined to convict. Paxton was acquitted within the Texas Senate in September, 2023, after a two-week trial.
