Man armed with machete confronts Conroe police officer in MLK Park

Conroe police shot a person after he allegedly swung a machete at an officer at MLK Park.

CONROE, Texas — A 32-year-old man is recovering within the hospital after being shot by a Conroe police officer Monday night when he allegedly swung a machete and moved towards the officer in MLK Park, in line with the Conroe Police Division.

The incident occurred round 7:44 p.m. on June 9, after a number of 911 calls reported a person armed with a machete strolling via MLK Park on Avenue M, swinging the weapon.

When a patrol officer arrived and tried to speak to the person, recognized as Zachary Raychel, police say he ignored instructions and continued to swing the machete whereas yelling, “shoot me.” As he moved towards the officer, the officer, fearing for his security, fired a single spherical, putting Raychel.

Raychel was given rapid life-saving support and transported to an area hospital in secure situation, police stated. No civilians had been injured in the course of the incident.

The Conroe Police Division’s Prison Investigations Division, in coordination with the Montgomery County District Legal professional’s Workplace, is actively investigating the case. The officer concerned, a four-year veteran of the division, has not been recognized.

“Chief Buckholtz extends his ideas and prayers to all these affected by this incident and our police household is grateful for the security of the officer,” the division stated in a press release.
